AI answer engines are the new search. Here’s exactly why some businesses get cited — and what it takes to become one of them.

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Search has fundamentally changed. When someone asks ChatGPT “What’s the best accounting software for freelancers?” or types “Find me a business coach in Austin” into Perplexity, they don’t get ten blue links. They get a direct answer, with one or two cited sources.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring your website so that AI models can understand, trust, and cite your business in those answers.

Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for crawlers that rank pages, AEO optimizes for language models that must decide which businesses to mention by namewhen someone asks a relevant question. The selection criteria are different. The techniques are different. And the businesses that adapt first will compound an advantage that’s very difficult to reverse.

Why AI Models Cite Some Businesses and Not Others

AI models like ChatGPT and Perplexity don’t rank pages — they synthesize information. When they decide who to cite, they’re looking for four signals:

  • Is this entity clearly defined? A website that says “we help people” is invisible to AI. A website that says “Acme Dental is a family dental practice in Portland, Oregon, offering general and cosmetic dentistry since 2003” gives the model something concrete to cite.
  • Is the information machine-readable? Structured data (JSON-LD schema) tells AI models exactly what your business is, what it offers, and how to describe you in a sentence.
  • Is the source authoritative? AI models favor businesses that appear on trusted third-party sources — directories, local press, professional associations. Cross-references build credibility.
  • Is the content specific and factual? Vague marketing copy doesn’t get cited. Direct, verifiable statements do.

5 Practical Steps to Get Cited by AI Models

1. Add JSON-LD Schema Markup

Schema markup is the single highest-leverage change most businesses can make. Add LocalBusiness, Organization, or Service schema to every key page. Include your name, address, phone number, description, and sameAs links pointing to your verified social profiles and directory listings.

AI models can read structured data directly. It removes ambiguity about who you are, what you do, and why you should be mentioned — in a format purpose-built for machines.

2. State Your Entity Clearly on Every Page

Your homepage, About page, and service pages should each contain a clear, factual description of your business: who you are, what you do, who you serve, and where you operate. Don’t bury this in marketing language. Write it as if you’re briefing a journalist — or an AI model.

Example: “Northside Plumbing is a licensed plumbing contractor serving residential and commercial clients in Chicago, IL. Founded in 2009, we specialize in emergency repairs, repiping, and sewer line replacement.” That sentence alone is something an AI model can cite and attribute to a real business.

3. Build a Consistent Web Presence

Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) should be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories, and social profiles. Inconsistencies signal to AI that the data is unreliable.

AI models cross-reference sources. A consistent footprint across the web is how they verify that you’re a real, established business — and not a scraped placeholder.

4. Write Direct, Question-Answering Content

AI models are trained to answer questions. If your content directly answers the questions your customers ask, you’re aligned with how these models retrieve information.

Create pages that answer specific questions: “How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Dallas?” “What is the difference between a trademark and a copyright?” Use clear H2 headers, short paragraphs, and concrete answers — not hedge-everything corporate prose. The more directly your content answers a question, the more likely it is to be surfaced.

5. Earn Citations from Authoritative Sources

If a credible industry publication, a local news outlet, or an established directory mentions your business by name, AI models treat that as a strong trust signal. Get listed in verified directories. Reach out for inclusion in “best of” articles in your niche. Guest post on respected industry sites.

The more authoritative sources that mention your name in context, the more likely an AI is to surface you when a relevant question is asked.
